THE CHALLENGE

Runna is an AI-powered digital fitness and running app creating personalised training plans and insight to its users. Since launching in 2022, millions of people in >180 countries have trained with Runna to take their running to the next level.

Runna approached us shortly after their Seed raise. They were quickly scaling beyond the support provided by their accounting firm. With a Seed+ round on the horizon, they needed more hands-on support from people who understood both their business and how to build scalable finance functions.

WHAT WE DID

Once introduced, we did a high-level review of Runna's finance function against our FinOps framework to understand where the gaps were and their growth readiness.

Runna started working with us on a fractional scope (1-2 days/week) to give them maximum flexibility as their growth continued. We reviewed the scope each quarter, working closely with Dom and Josh (Runna's CEO & COO) to make sure our support scaled and adapted as the company grew.

During our work together, we focused on:

  • Bringing payroll in-house
  • Setting up a more controlled AP approvals process, introducing Pleo and advancing onto Tipalti when size required it
  • Getting management accounts in order
  • Taking over management of pension
  • Building out bespoke reporting framework

THE RESULTS

In just over a year, Runna closed out a Seed+ funding round. Our support therefore had to evolve from our fractional model to our growth model. We built out the team that supported Runna, ramping up time with one of our Analysts and introducing a FinOps Manager to make sure Runna's processes were set up for real scale.

In short, we ended up running most of the operational finance function for Runna during a critical time for their business.

In what can only be called an incredible achievement, Runna was acquired by US-digital fitness giant, Strava (in < 4 years!). Leading up to the acquisition, we knew that Runna would need all hands on deck to ensure a smooth due diligence process.

Runna therefore switched onto our fully-embedded model, meaning one of their RORA team working with them full-time bringing across best practice from our experience supporting >200 startups.

It’s been an incredible journey — with some notable milestones being:

  • Seed+ funding round closed successfully
  • US expansion with Boston office launched
  • Apple iPhone App of the Year finalist (2024)
  • Official training platform and sponsor for TCS New York City Marathon
  • Acquired by Strava (2025)
